“All, too, will bear in mind this sacred principle, that though the will of the majority is in all cases to prevail, that will, to be rightful, must be reasonable; that the minority possess their equal rights, which equal laws must protect, and to violate would be oppression.” — Thomas Jefferson

Each of Akira Kurosawa’s eight stories, based on his own dreams, is like a masterpiece hanging in an art gallery. Simply pause for the length of each to study and appreciate their beauty. If you love art and can imagine seeing an expressionist/art nouveau/surrealist set of pictures come to life then you are going to enjoy this collection of shorts. But, understand, these are not light and fluffy. No ice cream, sunshine and puppy dogs here. Instead, I can best describe it as a reflection on the fragility of being, a recognition of our quest for understanding the world around and within us, and an examination of both the power and beauty of nature and how it impacts and is integral to life. This film has in it some of the most beautiful cinematagrophy I have ever seen. The layering of sounds, language, music, and color along with the texture of nature captured me from the start and heightened the intellectual intensity and emotion of the stories at every turn. This may be one of the best films you’ve never seen, by one of the greatest directors of our time, and I hope you will enjoy it as much as I have!
